While my husband and I were having our five-day detox period, we were only allowed to eat fruits and vegetables aside from the prescribed power shake and nutritional supplements. During one of those days that we found ourselves famished after a business appointment, we headed to Pipino. Pipino is the vegan restaurant of Pino Restobar.
Since awareness for eating healthy is fast gaining ground, putting up a vegan restaurant looks like a viable business concept. At present, a lot of people with diabetes, cancer and cardio-vascular diseases have difficulty in finding a restaurant that serves appropriate food for the kind of diet that their doctors have prescribed. It is not unusual to see them cheat on their diet. Can't blame them. The feeling of being deprived of these pleasures is for me, one form of torture.
Years ago, eating healthy means substituting meat with seitan, a wheat gluten that has a similar texture of meat. A vegan friend told me that I can use seitan like meat, for example substitute it for pork or chicken when cooking chicken and pork adobo. He warned me though that I should not expect for it to taste like the real thing. My initial attempt at eating meat-less was obviously not successful. After that, I promised myself not to eat seitan again and I was back to my carnivorous lifestyle.
You can say that I was elated when I stumbled upon Pipino. The hubby and I found the food palatable. I felt great after eating as I knew I was doing something right for my health. It make me think of putting up a similar eatery. Nutritious food, affordability and the right marketing, I think that would work.
